Testing IPTV

IPTV, the delivery of broadcast TV and video on demand (VOD) over IP networks, is fast becoming an essential feature for telcos looking to compete with cable and satellite operators. Broadcast TV and VOD share IP bandwidth with other IP-based services, so close attention must be paid to the customer's subjective quality of experience. This means eliminating jitter, latency, and packet loss, and speeding up channel change time. Along with end-to-end testing, testing IPTV is necessary for every major subsystem: super head-end, video transport network, access network, infrastructure components, and customer premises equipment. Ixia's IxLoad provides the framework and client/server emulations required for testing IPTV.
White Papers
- Developing a Holistic Testing Strategy for Ensuring a Successful IPTV Deployment - offers a systematic approach to testing an IPTV transport infrastructure in its early and predeployment stages.
- IPTV over IMS Testing - Addressing IPTV/IMS Challenges for Quad-Play Services - examines the promise that IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) technology offers for the delivery of IPTV and converged services. The standards bodies involved in IPTV over IMS are detailed, along with the ongoing plans for migration of today's IPTV to IPTV over IMS. The challenges associated with testing IPTV over IMS in a quad-play environment rounds out the white paper.
Datasheets
- IxLoad - assessing the performance of quad-play networks and devices. IxLoad tests IPTV by emulating IPTV and quad-play subscribers and associated protocols to ensure subscriber Quality of Experience (QoE). Both linear broadcasts and Video on Demand (VoD) services are tested.
- IxLoad: IPTV and Video - describes now IxLoad may be used to test IPTV and video servers and systems. Covers the IGMP, MLD, MPEG, RTSP and RTP protocols.
- Testing MS IPTV with IxLoad - describes the manner in which IxLoad tests Microsoft's™ MS IPTV clients and servers.
- Testing SIP with IxLoad - IxLoad's Voice plug-in is the perfect tool for functional, performance, and stability testing of SIP-based Voice over IP (VoIP) components.
- Testing IMS with IxLoad - IxLoad is a complete solution that can be used to verify all aspects of IMS systems and their components.
Presentations
- IPTV Tutorial at Netevents.tv
- watch Ixia's Deepesh Arora discuss IPTV technology and testing requirements.
Articles
- - the necessity for testing IPTV in Triple Play environments.
- - why IPTV delivery networks and servers must be tested both for linear and video on demand (VoD) services.
- - Vhow VoIP can be tested in a converged Triple Play environment.
- - why predeployment bandwidth and throughput testing is a necessary step for service providers.
- - why Video on Demand (VoD) is probably the most difficult part of a video deployment - and how to test it.
Brochures
- - Discusses the means by which IPTV is delivered to the home. The implementation differences between broadcast video and video on demand (VoD) are highlighted. An overview of video delivery challenges is presented, including channel change performance. IPTV associated testing requirements are covered.
- - discusses Ixia's testing solutions for switching and routing, Triple Play delivery, IMS, data center operations, Carrier Ethernet, network assessment, and broadband access performance and conformance.
- - the Ixia chassis and load modules used to generate line-rate traffic and capture results.
Poster

IxLoad - Aptixia IxLoad is a highly scalable, integrated test solution for assessing the performance of quad-play networks and devices. IxLoad emulates IPTV and quad-play subscribers and associated protocols to ensure subscriber Quality of Experience (QoE). Protocols supported include IGMP, MLD, and RTSP video protocols; SIP and MGCP voice protocols; and HTTP, FTP, and SMTP data protocols. In addition, IxLoad can be used to test critical aspects of the infrastructure, including DNS, DHCP, RADIUS, and LDAP services.
IxNetwork - characterizes the performance and scalability of routers and switches. IxNetwork includes the facilities for testing Ethernet OAM and CFM, BFD, and bridging and routing protocols.
Ixia Platform (Chassis/Load Modules) - the Ixia chassis and load modules used to generate line-rate traffic and capture results.
